Baltic 21 continues to shed light on sustainable development in the Baltic Sea region

The Baltic 21 Senior Officials Group (SOG) approved the CPMR Baltic Sea Commission as its new Member. The SOG also considered a proposal for a new Lighthouse Project named AGORA that was submitted by the Tourism and Agriculture sectors. The SOG 22 approved this proposal on the condition that the project secures funding for its implementation. According to its basic framework, AGORA aims to establish a long-lasting (financially self-sufficient) working structure and to develop a strategic concept for sustainable tourism development in the BSR using a pan-Baltic approach. Notably, the potential implementation of AGORA as a Lighthouse Project would be in line with Baltic 21’s fulfilment of its Strategy Guidelines.

Baltic 21 is continuing to work on new ideas for potential Lighthouse Projects. The project proposals, Baltic Forest, submitted by the Industry Sector, Baltic Green Ring, submitted by the Industry Sector co-lead party Russia, and Balanced urban/rural sustainable development, submitted by BSSSC are project proposals under development, which could be approved at a later date.

In addition, the Baltic 21 Secretariat is pleased to launch the latest version of its info CD-ROM (2/2005) which includes a variety of useful Baltic 21 publications, information from the Baltic 21 web site, and other relevant materials. The production of the CD-ROM is part of Baltic 21’s ongoing out-reach effort to enhance public access to information about the importance of region-wide sustainable development. Specifically, the information included in the CD-ROM 2/2005 provides a number of publications about Region’s status as of 2005, and includes an overview of Baltic 21’s Strategy Guidelines. Several of the publications on the new CD-ROM are accessable in most of the national languages of the Baltic Sea States. The CD-ROM version 2/2005 is available free of charge from the Baltic 21 Secretariat.
