Danish environment report praises clear targets

Denmark's latest state of the environment report concludes that “the best results are achieved when clear targets are set”. Examples include water quality, where a series of action plans on the aquatic environment have led to improvements despite steadily growth and increasing intensification in farming; energy, where efficiency and conservation measures have paid off, and air pollution, where the whole of Europe has benefited from agreements to cut sulphur dioxide emissions.

This is the fourth in a series of reports compiled every three years by the National Environmental Research Institute (DMU). The main future challenges identified by the agency are climate change, continuing pressure on surface water quality and natural habitats, public health, and consumption of resources.

Environment Minister Connie Hedegaard said in a statement that the government would introduce measures aimed at demonstrating how “environmental awareness and competitiveness ... can support each other”. These would include a public information campaign on “green personal responsibility” and new action plans on environmental technology and chemicals.
