The Hamburg Universities Sustainability Network (HUSN) – A research Network of Hamburg Universities towards Sustainable Development

The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany, with around 1.7 million inhabitants. Like Berlin, Hamburg is a “city-state”. Hamburg is northern Germany's cultural and commercial centre and its metropolitan region involves in excess of 3 million people. Combined with this formidable economic profile, Hamburg is a major centre of science and technology and is a key player in respect of R&D in Germany. Some of the main universities and institutions of higher education in Hamburg are:

  • University of Hamburg (around 40,000 students)

  • Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (around 14,000 students)

  • Technical University Hamburg-Harburg (around 5,200 students)

  • University of Fine Arts (around 1,200 students)

  • University of Music (around 750 students)

  • University of the Army (around 1,900 students)

Hamburg spends over 200 million per year on science and technology-related projects, being a very attractive partner for international projects. In order to organise themselves and play a meaningful role in attracting R&D funds for sustainability projects, the HUSN has been created

The overall aim of the HUSN is to link Hamburg universities and the professors/academic staff interested in sustainability issues, with a view to maximising the use of the excellent know-how available in the various institutions. It will do so by:

  • preparing profiles of expertise and know-how available in each institution, so that relevant professors and scientific staff may be contacted when opportunities arise;

  • supplying information on projects proposals and calls for tender to the participant professors and academic staff;

  • supplying information on events;

  • assisting in the preparation of projects;

  • supporting in the organisation of specialist events; and

  • mediating /facilitating the participation of Hamburg universities in international projects in the field of sustainability.

Last but not least the HUSN will also provide advice to each university on how they can green their own operations (i.e. making university work less expensive and more sustainable) and include sustainability elements in their curricula.
