Environmental Informatics and Industrial Ecology Conference

The EnviroInfo 2008 conference will be held in Lüneburg, Germany on 10-12 September 2008. The event aims to facilitate the exchange of experience and know-how between academics, and professionals in this research field.

It will focus on “environmental informatics and industrial ecology”. UrE Conference 2008 “Impacts of Pollution in a Changing Urban Environment”

17-19 September, Manchester, UK

Cities offer significant economic and social benefits to human society and yet they also pose potentially serious threats to both human and environmental health. The move towards sustainable development demands addressing these kinds of threats in a holistic and integrated manner. This, on the other hand, requires integrated frameworks, policies, methodologies, tools and solutions for sustainable management of pollution in ever-changing urban environments. It also requires involvement of, and action by, a wide range of stakeholders, from researchers to industry and policy makers to citizens.

The main aim of the PUrE conference is to bring together internationally-leading researchers and experts to help address the challenges posed by pollution in cities. The conference will provide a forum for researchers and professionals from academia, industry and other organisations as well as policy makers to present and discuss the state-of-the-art developments in this field and to identify key future research needs. Conference themes include but are not limited to:

World Sustainable Building Conference

21-25 September, Melbourne, Australia

The World Sustainable Building (SB) Conference series, which is held every three years, is the peak gathering of the world’s leading technical experts and researchers on sustainable built environments.

SB08 Melbourne will continue a traditional focus on technical developments and case studies. CSIRO (Australia’s national research organisation), leading universities and research groups in Australia and from around the world, are all expected to release new research. 5th EMSU Conference “A new knowledge culture. Universities facing global changes for sustainability”

15-17 October, Barcelona, Spain

The 5th EMSU Conference will be held in Barcelona, Spain from 15-17 October 2008 at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, co-organized with Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and RCE-Barcelona. The aim of the conference is to provoke debate on the role of the university in sustainability, particularly in the following five key areas of global change:

   Climate change and resource scarcity.

2. 2.

   Production and consumption systems.

3. 3.

   Governance and changing responsibilities.

4. 4.

   Poverty and equity.

5. 5.

   Urban systems.

EMSU aims to consider these areas from the following key areas of activity in a University: teaching, research, internal management and relations with the community. To maximise participation and minimise its environmental impact, the conference offers opportunities to participate without travelling to Barcelona, including an online survey, workshops in different parts of the world and opportunities to connect to the final conference via the web.

LIFECORE 2008, the Łódz International Fair, Exhibition, and Congress on Renewable Energy

3-6 December 2008, Łódz, Poland

The aim of LIFECORE 2008 is to bring together the people involved in research and practice of renewable energy from around Europe and from other parts of the world. The four main events that will be organized concurrently are:

1. 1.

   A scientific congress, where around 300 scientists from all over the world will present their work and discuss problems and issues that must be faced by the well-established as well as new and emerging markets in the sector of renewables.

2. 2.

   A fair of machines, equipment, and devices related to renewable sources of energy.

3. 3.

   An open-public exhibition of publications, books, and other media sources that promote the use of “green energy”.

4. 4.

   An educational symposium for young people (students, pupils etc.) and the general public designed to make these social groups aware of the problems of energy shortage and the European policy of power generation and consumption.

Additionally, the LIFECORE 2008 organizers will present the outcomes of the scientific congress at a two-hour lecture during the 14th Conference of Parties by the United Nation’s Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP14), which will be held on 1-12 December 2008 in Poznan, Poland.
