This issue features selected papers from the International Conference on Information Integration and Web-based Applications and Services (iiWAS2009) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in December 14-16, 2009. iiWAS2009 marked the 11th version of the iiWAS conference series.

Four papers are included in this issue. These papers have been extended from their original versions presented at the conference. The first two papers focus on web services, while the other two deal with XML and web applications.

The first paper “Techniques on developing context-aware web services” by Quan Z. Sheng, Jian Yu, Aviv Segev and Kewen Liao introduces a model-driven platform, called ContextServ that can be used to rapidly develop a context-aware web application, Smart Adelaide Guide. ContextServ adopts a model-driven development approach where a Unified Modeling Language (UML)-based modeling language – ContextUML – is used to model web services and its context-awareness features. The ContextServ offers a set of visual editing and automation tools for easy and fast generating and deploying context-aware web services.

The second paper “Security conscious AI-planning-based composition of semantic web services” by Sayed Gholam Hassan Tabatabaei, Amir Vahid Dastjerdi, Wan M.N. Wan Kadir, Suhaimi Ibrahim and Elahe Sarafian proposes an approach, called SCAIMO, to achieve security conscious composition of semantic web services. This secure task matchmaker is responsible of matching security conscious tasks with operators and methods based on Web Service Modeling Ontology and Description Logic to support the proposed SCAIMO framework. This SCAIMO is implemented and evaluated using a test case to show that this approach can provide an applicable solution.

The third paper “Querying and restructuring XML data by graphical query language” by Mourad Ykhlef and Sarra Alqahtani proposes a new graphical query language GQLX for querying and restructuring XML data. This language integrates various novel techniques for XML query syntax/semantic into a single language with a suitable matching algorithm which makes the language not only able to extract information from XML documents, but also to apply powerful restructuring operators, based on a well-defined semantics.

The fourth paper “Extracting content holes by comparing community-type content with Wikipedia” by Akiyo Nadamoto, Eiji Aramaki, Takeshi Abekawa and Yohei Murakami proposes a method for searching content holes in community-type content in order to extract and represent content holes from discussions on social network services and blogs. A number of images for different searching methods are classified and represented to define content holes as the first step toward realizing the aim of a content-hole search system using Wikipedia.

Taking this opportunity, we would like to thank all the authors, referees and the iiWAS2009 program committee members for their contributions and valuable comments on this issue.
