EBSCO Document Services ceased business operations on 30 September 1998. The President of EBSCO Industries Inc., J.T. Stephens, made the announcement on 14 September.

"The decision to close EBSCO Document Services was based on economic factors and an assessment of industry trends", he said. "In today's world, a document delivery company faces government-subsidised competition, increasingly costly and restrictive publisher licensing and the need for significant technical investment with low cost/revenue margins to provide a return on this investment."

The closing of EBSCO Document Services does not affect any other EBSCO-related products or services. Business continues as usual for such products as EBSCO Alert and Relais International, Inc. EBSCO Subscription Services and EBSCO Publishing also continue as leaders in information management products and services.
