The Resource Discovery Network Centre came into being on 12 January 1999, when a grant was awarded to a consortium of King's College London (AHDS) and to the University of Bath (UKOLN), with support from the University of Hull.
This follows a Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) circular which called for full proposals to set up a Resource Discovery Network Centre and for expressions of interest to provide a subject gateway service within the Resource Discovery Network (RDN). The expressions of interest supplied have been grouped and assessed by the Subject Gateway Working Group within the context of the RDNC strategy.
The RDNC prepared a strategy which proposed that the RDN be developed as a network organisation comprising a centre, a set of faculty-level hubs and gateway services provided by the hubs or their partners. Hubs are to provide a focus for service and outreach development within their areas, and will work with the RDNC to further develop the RDN.
A development plan is now under way with the aim of working with partners to develop hubs in the following areas: social science, business and law; biomedical sciences; engineering; computing and maths; physical sciences; cultural arts and industries and humanities. Plans are also being made for several supporting activities: a technical review of interoperability and standards issues; a review of international subject gateway activity; a business review which advises on the organisation of the RDN and an international subject gateway workshop.
