Keywords: Library services, Internet, Catalogues, Information retrieval, Australia

The National Library of Australia has released phase one of the Australian Libraries Gateway. The Gateway is a Web-based directory service designed to improve access to information about some 4,500 Australian libraries, their services and collections.

The prototype of this service was released in 1988. The new service has been redeveloped using suggestions and feedback from the Australian library community. The Gateway enables users to search a specific subject in a specific geographic area using the new maps covering the five major Australian capital cities, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane. This makes it easier to search and locate libraries in those cities.

Each library listed in the directory has its own password which allows it to update or amend information about its library services and collections remotely via the World Wide Web. As libraries manage their own information, it should ensure that it is up to date and reliable.
