Digitised Pamphlets and Periodicals of the French Revolution

Keywords France, History, Library materials, Preservation

The Center for Research Libraries, the University of Chicago Library and the American and French Research on the Treasury of the French Language (ARTFL) Project have co-operated on a project to digitise pamphlets and periodicals from the French Revolution of 1848 held by the Center for Research Libraries (CRL).

With the declaration of the provisional government in France during February 1848, the previous restrictions on the press were lifted and a great number of periodicals and other printed materials emerged. As well as the major papers, such as Le Nation and La Réforme there were countless other newspapers, pamphlets and other periodicals representing every political opinion from socialist to royalist. The variety and abundance of these papers make them a fascinating source of the cultural, political and social aspects of the French Revolution.

The database created by this project is an effort to increase knowledge about the 1848 Revolution around the world. The materials provided on the database have been collected by CRL and are held on microfilm. The collection comprises over 100 pamphlets and periodicals from 1848 to 1851, all of which are available through CRL's document supply services.
