A digital library designed for the benefit of users throughout the whole of Africa went on-line on 3 November 1999. It will provide Internet access for African users to a library of full-text books at no cost to the users. The library has been established by the Association of African Universities and Technikon SA (TSA) in collaboration with the American company netLibrary. TSA has provided the initial sponsorship of R1million to set up the Digital Library.

Over 60 publishers are providing full-text books for the library and the use of encryption will ensure that only one user will access a book at any one time. Sponsorship will be on a per book basis and sponsors will be able to advertise by means of banners per book sponsored.

"At this point the library contains 3,000 books and the collection will be built as fast as funds permit," said Paul West, Director, TSA's Centre of Lifelong Learning. "It is an exciting step which will open doors for many who would previously have had limited access to resource material."
