Turning instead of grinding

Turning instead of grinding

Keywords: Grinding, Turning

Extremely hard and heat-resistant ceramics used to be difficult to machine to precise shape. Now, laser-assisted turning can replace complex grinding techniques. The Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (I PT), located in Aachen, has developed the world's first prototype for laser-assisted turning using diode lasers. It can machine even silicon nitride ceramics with ease. In contrast to grinding, laser-assisted turning can create contours to any specification with one and the same tool. From the basic dies, ring bearings of varying size and width can be made, for example, without any change of tool.
