British Gear Association appoints new technical director

Tom Marsh is the British Gear Association's new technical director, providing technical, research and development services to the UK mechanical power transmission industry.

Tom, 42, is a former marine engineer in the Royal Navy and, among other appointments, served on HMS Invincible in the Falklands conflict and as the Marine Engineer Officer of HMS Campbeltown. During a two and a half year appointment in the Royal Navy Gearing Section, at Foxhill, Bath ­ then called ME111 ­ he was responsible for co-ordinating all naval gearing research and development and for managing in-service support for submarines and war vessels.

In particular, he conducted gear inspections on all submarines and the majority of minor war vessels, was responsible for introducing a new gearing oil to submarines and major surface ships and was responsible for improving gearbox flushing procedures.

On joining the BGA he has taken on responsibility for technical and education matters concerning the industry, as well as co-ordinating the activities of the Gear Research Foundation, which is currently running a number of major industrial and academic collaborative research programmes.
