Stuart Oil, of Wolverhampton, have developed a unique sterilising and purifyng system which controls micro-biological contamination in machine coolants used in the metalworking industry.

Together with Leominster company Arbour Tech., Stuart Oil have developed the digital automatic steriliser microbiological control system which controls bacterial, fungal and viral contamination by the controlled dosing of silver and copper ions directly into the machine coolant.

It is claimed to greatly reduce harmful biocide use and with some specially formulated oils could eliminate their use altogether.

The fact that copper is a natural fungicide was known to the ancient Greeks and silver was also used by them to keep water drinkable and reduce bacteria. The Americans used to put a silver dollar in the water for the same reason. However, it is only recently that Stuart Oil and Arbour Tech. have perfected the "dosed" control of silver and copper ions directly into the machine coolant.

The new system, which is intended mainly for centralised systems, can be used extensively in industries which require any metalworking and machinery to be cooled during operation, and has many environmental, health and safety and cost advantages for the user.

On health and safety the claimed advantages include:

  • the reduction in odours caused by bacterial and fungal contamination of oils in a workshop environment;

  • the reduction of odours of biocides and resulting respiratory problems;

  • the reduction of cases of skin irritation due to biocides;

  • reduction of dermatitis to operators.

Environmentally the claimed advantages include the reduction in the storage of hazardous chemicals and the possibility of subsequent spillage, and the reduction in the waste disposal of hazardous chemicals and reduced and less toxic biocides.

Stuart Oil, which recently gained ISO 9001 accreditation for quality standards in product design, also claim the new system dramatically reduces operating costs.

Because of the longer life of the coolant, waste disposal costs are reduced and there is a saving in labour costs for coolant management, reduction in machinery downtime, reduction in man hours costs because of health concerns, and ease of maintenance of the sterilising system, in comparison with biocide use.

Stuart Oil can provide the DAS system with additional equipment for the management of the whole metalworking system, including a static controlled mixing station, a mobile mixing station and a de-mineralising system for water treatment.
