High pressure pump for common rail diesel engines can be lubricated by engine oil

Keywords Engine oils, Diesel engine

The problems associated with diesel fuel lubricity are well-known, although the lubrication requirements of pumps designed for "common rail" injection systems are not as severe as those of the older distribution injection variety. Nevertheless, the Stanadyn Automotive Corporation have developed a high pressure fuel pump for "common rail" systems which can be lubricated either by the fuel itself or by a supply of oil drawn from the engine's own lubrication system. The modular design of the pump enables the configuration to be matched to a wide range of light and heavy duty diesel engines. Controlled by the engine management unit, delivery pressures of up to 2,000 bar can be maintained, independent of engine speed and injection requirements. The drive can be from the engine camshaft using a toothed belt, gears or a unique poly-cam direct drive, the latter allowing the pump internal cam to directly engage the end of the engine camshaft with a polygon drive surface, thus dispensing with the need for drive gears, pulleys or belts. The pump also features an integral lift pump which operates as an inlet-metered variable-output pump, which delivers only as much fuel as is needed at any given time, with no spillage or excess delivery.
