New benchtop injection moulder with sophisticated control system

Keywords Injection moulding

The new 16/160 Injection Moulding machine from MCP of Stone, Staffordshire is a screw-preplasticising, plunger inject, four-tie bar machine with a 16-tonne clamp force and a 16-gramme shot weight. It has a sophisticated control system which uses position sensors supplied by Variohm Components Limited.

The 16/160 has been designed specifically to mould small precision components from a wide range of thermoplastic materials from polycarbonates and acrylics to PBT and nylon. It can precolour materials using masterbatch or liquid colouring. The machine injects through a proprietary hot-runner system directly into the mould cavity, thereby alleviating wastage due to sprues and runners.

The machine is controlled by a touch-screen operated CPU which monitors and controls four temperature zones, pressure and injection speed control, soft close and mould sensing.

All position sensing utilises Novotechnik position sensors supplied by Variohm Components. The units deployed in this machine utilise Conductive Plastic technology which gives excellent repeatability (0.01mm) at high operating speeds (up to 10 metres/second). Each unit is individually computer corrected for linearity during the production process.

These are "absolute" units, meaning they always know where they are even after the power supply has been interrupted. This allows MCP to make all the required settings just once in the commissioning process; thereafter they need no further adjustment.

Novotechnik units are available with stroke lengths from 25mm to 4 metres.
