New measurement helpline will add competitive edge to companies operating in the oil sector

Keywords: Oils, Measurement

A new Measurement Helpline has been launched by the DTI-backed National Measurement Partnership (NMP). For the first time ever in the UK companies operating in the oil sector can access the UK's measurement knowledge base simply by calling the National Measurement Partnership Helpline on 020 8943 7070.

Research by the DTI has shown a low level of awareness throughout manufacturing industry about the UK's National Measurement System. Specifically, the majority of companies are unaware of the opportunities for increased profitability and competitiveness that exist simply by accessing the NMS and employing best measurement practice.

The launch of the National Measurement Partnership Helpline provides industrial callers with a "one-stop-shop" for measurement advice. Information will be readily available from experts covering every aspect of measurement within an industrial context including: measurement training, process control, analytical science, standardisation and regulation, engineering, accreditation, quality, calibration, materials and trading standards.

The priority for the Helpline is to provide a fast response service during office hours to callers, wherever possible providing information immediately, and where this is not possible, to provide the names and contact details of experts. Initial contact and advice are provided free of charge.

Investment in specially developed helpline software and a dedicated helpline team of operators based at the National Physical Laboratory will ensure efficient processing and response to caller enquiries. Additionally, it will integrate and improve the helpline services already provided by the UK's four national laboratories (National Physical Laboratory, National Engineering Laboratory, LGC, National Weights and Measures Laboratory) and the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

Further information on the National Measurement Helpline and NMP programme activity in the UK can be obtained by calling the Helpline on 020 8943 7070 or by visiting the NMP website: www.nmpuk.co.uk

About the National Measurement Partnership

The National Measurement Partnership (NMP) unites, for the first time, key UK organisations involved in the supply of measurement. Its aims are to identify and promote best measurement practice, improve access to measurement expertise and increase the qualified skill base in metrology. The aims will be met by implementing the NMP programme, which is funded by the National Measurement System Policy Unit (NMSPU) of the DTI. The NMP programme is managed on behalf of the DTI by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL).
