Dry and wet sliding are examined in this issue. Dr Mucino's paper presents an analysis of a cylinder sliding inside a fully lubricated parallel track. The mobility chart development may be useful in predicting potential lubrication breakdown points in some mechanisms.

Dr Terheci reports on work done to improve results when examining dry sliding in the laboratory. A number of practical recommendations are made which will be of special interest to those in this field who are developing measurement techniques.

Professor Yilbas covers work done to demonstrate the effect on their wear of coating drill bits. Of particular relevance is the interface layer between the coating and the tool base.

Professor Lundberg, who in this issue presents the first part of his research into railway rolling stock wheel bearing lubrication, reports on a completely different area of work. This part covers the practical evaluation of different greases in field trials. Some interesting and surprising conclusions are reached which will, I am sure, provoke thought amongst both grease and bearing manufacturers.
