Special lead-bronze bearings from Dyn-Metal have increased the service life of Unicorn Abrasive's hydraulic pump. The new bearings have already run for over three years without problems compared to the previous bronze bearings that required changing at least once a year (Plate 6).

Plate 6 Independent tests have demonstrated that Dyn-Metal bronze bearings provide greater wear resistance than conventional bearing bronzes

Unicorn Abrasives, one of the world's leading suppliers of abrasive products to industry, uses the reciprocating hydraulic pump of 2,240lbf/in2 capacity to power presses in the production of grinding wheels. The reduction of down-time due to replacing the grease lubricated bearings has improved their production efficiency. The new 125mm diameter bearings were manufactured in Dyn-Metal grade RM, a 5 per cent lead-bronze.

The high wear resistance provided by the special metallurgical treatment of Dyn-Metal bronzes has gained Dyn a reputation for long life bearings. Independent tests carried out by the Polytechnic of London and the PTB laboratories in Germany demonstrated that the wear resistance of Dyn-Metal bronzes is two to three times greater than that of bronzes of similar metallurgical composition. These bearings are used in a wide range of applications including pumps, rolling mills, swing bridges and lock gates.
