The DuPont Plunkett Awards 2002 for innovative applications in DuPont Teflon fluoropolymers is now open for entries. Information and entry form are posted at www.teflon.com (under Plunkett 2002), and entries may be submitted online. Deadline for entries is 30 November, 2001.

Additionally, a CD ROM containing text and images from all entries to the 2000 awards has just been released by DuPont, to act as a reference for both potential entrants and customers. It is available either online or from local DuPont contacts. "The Plunkett Awards were established in 1988 to recognise innovations and improved products made with Teflon," says Theo Schroots, technical marketing manager, Fluoropolymers/Europe. The competition is named after Roy J. Plunkett, the DuPont scientist who in 1938 discovered PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) resin, later trademarked Teflon. As in previous years, the competition is being conducted in three regions: Europe, the Americas, and Asia/Pacific. For each region, there will be awards of US$5,000 for first place, US$3,000 for second place, and US$1,500 for third place.

Entries for the Plunkett Awards are invited from companies, independent developers and other professionals who have used Teflon in creating new products or making substantial improvements to existing products. Such applications can be based on Teflon or Tefzel fluoropolymer resins, films, fibres, finishes and other DuPont fluoropolymer products licensed under the Teflon trademark, and must have been in commercial service no more than five years prior to entry. Products that have not been marketed are not eligible. Judges for the awards will include industry association officials, university professors, representatives of leading corporations and trade publication editors.

Criteria for judging will be degrees of innovation, breadth of application and commercial significance.
