DuPont Performance Lubricants introduces new Krytox XHT for high-temperature applications

Keyword: DuPont, Lubricants, High temperature

DuPont Performance Lubricants has recently launched Krytox XHT, a full range of products designed for extremely high-temperature applications with low-oil evaporation that extends the life of bearings in industrial applications. The business has also named Steve Johnston as the new sales contact for its Krytox range in the UK and Ireland.

Krytox XHT is a unique blend of low-volatility oils and additive and thickeners that increase adhesion to protect bearing surfaces that are subjected to high heat conditions. These lubricants allow systems to be operated above the limits of other high-temperature lubricants.

"DuPont Krytox XHT was designed to meet the demands of industries experiencing production downtime due to extreme operating temperatures", said John Moriarty, market and business manager for DuPont Performance Lubricants and Release Systems. "Equipment downtime due to bearing failure is a major factor in productivity losses." These new greases have superior durability and will allow significant improvement in bearing life. In the past, high operating temperatures required bearing replacement and reapplication of lubrication. Krytox XHT extends bearing life and lasts significantly longer, minimising reapplication.

In addition, Krytox XHT greases are durable in the most aggressive environments where temperatures reach extremes that exceed the capabilities of conventional lubricants.

The Krytox XHT line of greases are available with useful temperature ranges up to 406°C (762°F) for continuous use, with temperature spikes at 427°C (800°F) when used with proper metallurgy and relubrication intervals.

Industries and applications of Krytox XHT include:

  • Aerospace. Turbine temperatures are increasing to help achieve higher fuel efficiency. Many applications such as exhaust diverters, de-icing systems, thrust nozzles and other components that are close to the higher temperatures are candidates for these products.

  • Automotive. The trend is toward higher energy density in the drive trains which increases temperatures and loads. This will bring on the use of XHT products in future car models.

  • Industrial. Paint plant conveyor bearings, corrugator and paper machine bearings, welding machines, high-temperature fans and ovens, textile equipment, tenter frames, conveyor systems in glass and aluminum plants, textile calendar roll bearings, brick kiln car bearings, valve lubrication, ventilation fan bearing grease, rod mills, and valves.

Krytox Performance Lubricants are based on space-age fluoropolymer technology providing over the broadest range of temperatures (–57°C (–70°F) to 406°C (762°F), with spikes up to 437°C (800°F)). They are non-flammable and chemically inert. Krytox is clean, white and non-migrating, and is compatible with all elastomers and plastics. It does not carbonize, enabling ease in equipment maintenance and facility cleanup.

Steve Johnston has extensive experience in the areas of tribology, plant engineering and maintenance gained from positions held at ICI, DuPont and the DuPont Sabanchi joint venture. He is now based in Stockton-on-Tees.
