The standard Pin and Vee Block tests (ASTM D2670 – D3233) are used to determine the characteristics of lubricants. These tests were developed many decades ago, actually in the pre-electronic days, and report only limited data. Subtle quality differences between products or correlation with practice are not always detected. The researcher needs to obtain more data through the entire test in order to better assess the lubricants tribological properties.

The continuous logging of the test data provides additional information that could potentially be missed by the operator. These additional data can show the transitional changes in torque, friction, wear and temperature with respect to the applied load. Subtle changes in performance can now be documented and studied with the potential of providing better correlation with field results. Computer acquisition eliminates the possibility of operator error that can occur when manually recording test data.

Automatisation of the Pin and Vee Block test machine means the operator no longer has to stand with the test machine for the whole test duration. Test procedures are programmed into the system. Automating the test procedure significantly increases accuracy in test procedures. For example, uploading in steps can be programmed so that every step has the same duration.
