Editorial

We have four different pieces of work in this issue.

Victor Castano and his colleagues in Mexico report about the investigations they have made concerning an aluminium-graphite composite. They have produced samples of the composite by powder metallurgy techniques instead of casting, and are able to demonstrate some very interesting characteristics of the composite.

Hakan Kaleli in Turkey has been looking at the effect that synthetic engine oils additives can have on the emission control equipment. He illustrates the advantages of using phosphorus-free oils and also confirms that their use does not necessarily lead to increased wear rates. Interesting background information is included in this paper and we look forward to further reports on Dr Kaleli's work in this area.

Also from Turkey, Messrs Unal and Mimaroglu describe their work looking at the testing of polymers. Different types of polymers are increasingly used in machinery, especially where self-lubricating properties are required. However, this work highlights some of the care that needs to be taken when selecting a particular polymer from load/wear test work.

Finally, workers from Gulbarga University in India present some new work thus furthering our knowledge of squeeze films. Some very interesting conclusions are reached and may provoke thoughts from others working in this area.
