CDR Pompe SpA, a specialist chemical process pump manufacturer based in Senago near Milan, Italy, has dramatically extended the lifetime of O-ring seals operating in aggressive process media in its UCN-L Lined Series magnetic drive pumps, by switching to Kalrez ® Spectrum™ 6375 perfluoroelastomer parts from DuPont Dow Elastomers (Plates 3 and 4).
“The previous O-rings of fluoroelastomer (FKM), mounted on our type FC 35/50 mechanical seal and operating with impure sulfuric acid for dust laying service, failed each time after a maximum service life of only two months. By comparison, the Kalrez® Spectrum™ 6375 O-rings are still operating after 2 years in an identical critical environment without problems”, says Roberto Michelucci, Sales Manager, CDR Pompe SpA.

CDR magnetic drive and mechanical seal pumps are used mainly in pharmaceutical, chemical and petrochemical processing, where stringent safety and emissions standards in chemical handling are demanded. To meet these tough industry requirements, pump seals must possess optimal chemical and mechanical strength, exceptional chemical inertness (especially in the electronics, pharmaceutical and food processing sectors), and be easy to use.
The O-rings have now been in place for over 2 years without failure, leakage or contamination of the process stream. To date, the full extent of the new service lifetime, and the savings in reduced downtime and increased productivity, have yet to be seen.
Kalrez® Spectrum™ 6375 is designed specifically for the chemical process industry. It provides outstanding performance in an extremely wide range of chemicals including acids, bases, amines and steam. The innovative patented new curing system allows for continuous upper service temperatures of up to 275°C in applications such as mechanical seals, valves, flanges and pumps where elastomeric sealing is critical.
