Twin-XULS (Ultra Low Sulphur)

Keywords: Sulphur, Measurement, Testing and instruments

After 25 years working with the petroleum industry, Oxford Instruments now offers a powerful sulphur in road fuels analyser based on their high performance Twin-X EDXRF platform. With the capability of measuring sulphur down to the limits of new sulphur-free road fuels with sulphur content of less than 10mg/kg, the Twin- XULS is the first proportional counter EDXRF system capable of ultra low sulphur analysis, in the world. Fitted with low background proportional detector technology, the Twin-XULS achieves detection limits of ,1mg/kg (@3 sigma) for S in road fuels, which is similar to what can be achieved with wavelength dispersive or polarised EDXRF. With the ease of use of the EDXRF analysis technique and the more than attractive package, the Twin-XULS is more than just a cost- effective alternative for refineries and testing houses. In fact, the Twin-XULS brings back the technique of choice to many laboratories around the world doing precise sulphur determination in petrochemical products (Plates 2 and 3).

The Twin-XULS features are as follows:

  • precise ten-position auto-sampling system;

  • secondary safety window for sample handling security;

  • ease of use through user guided software interface;

  • minimum of operator training with method-embedded analysis recipes and embedded helpful hints;

  • smart check software tool for optimum analysis validation;

  • customized result output for adding conformity statements; and

  • easy to assemble sample cells.

The Twin-XULS is also capable of measuring sulfur in petroleum products at higher concentrations referring to ISO8754, ISO20847 and ASTM D4249 without any dilution steps in between and possible memory effects. Further low sulfur methods using this technology will be released soon.
