High pressure pumps now available in titanium from cat pumps

Cat Pumps Limited can now offer its high pressure block-style plunger pumps with manifolds made from titanium. Titanium offers excellent chemical resistance and can be used in seawater pumping applications and for pumping sulphurous fluids. It is also light in weight yet its mechanical properties make it ideal for high pressure applications.

Many models of cat pumps triplex positive-displacement pump are available with manifolds machined from solid forged billets allowing flexibility of choice of material even for small batch sizes for specialized applications. Recently a batch of these block-style plunger pumps was manufactured from titanium for a seawater application. Titanium was chosen for its excellent corrosion resistance in contact with high- salinity water at temperatures as high as 49°C.

Cat Pumps Sales Manager, Brian Hubbard, commented: “The production of this batch highlights the company's ability to manufacture pumps from a wide range of materials. We regularly produce pumps in stainless steels including Duplex and Super Duplex grades and from Hastelloy. Now we can also offer titanium, but more importantly, we have the design and production capabilities to utilise the benefits of any metal that might be specified for a particular application provided it has sufficient strength to withstand the high pressures our pumps are capable of generating.”

The manifold blocks and internal parts such as valves and seats are machined from solid billets of material to minimize the possibility of porosity and inclusions and to provide superior surface metallurgy compared to cast pump designs. Sophisticated computer aided design methods are used to optimise the each pump type, including use of finite area analysis to minimise the stresses and to control factors of safety thus increasing customer confidence.

Cat pumps offer more than 2,500 individual high-pressure, reciprocating pump models on over a dozen frame sizes with single pump flows from 0.1 to 265 l/min and pressures up to 490 bar.
