Bronkhorst integrated liquid dosing systems for single point responsibility

Article Type: New products From: Industrial Lubrication and Tribology, Volume 60, Issue 6

Liquid dosing systems offer a precise, automated means of metering reactants, catalysts and other additives into batch or continuous processing operations, without the need to pressurise the liquid source. Such systems are widely used in the chemical, food processing, pharmaceutical, paint and plastics industries, as well as analytical laboratories, and increasingly employed in water treatment for the liquid dosing of disinfectant. Yet there is an inherent difficulty in sourcing the flowmeter, pump or control package separately and integrating them together into a working assembly, let alone pinpointing areas of responsibility amongst the different component suppliers, should the system fail.

Now, Bronkhorst UK of Cambridge, market leaders in mass flow metering and control, has introduced a series of fully integrated liquid dosing systems, covering an enormous flow range from a few nanolitres to 1,000 kg/h and beyond. Fully factory assembled and tested, they are delivered as easy-to-use, compact systems, offering extremely high accuracy and virtually pulsation-free flow patterns, with single point responsibility for all components. Competitively priced, they offer a highly cost-effective, trouble-free solution for many dosing applications.

Each integrated liquid dosing system consists of a proven mass flowmeter from either Bronkhorst’s thermal mass LIQUI-FLOW or Coriolis-type CORI-FLOW series (Figure 1), with onboard controlling function, a closely coupled gear pump, liquid filter of the correct mesh type and size, a check valve to avoid backflow and all interconnecting material (Figure 2). Bronkhorst will undertake all electrical and mechanical connection, testing and optimisation, including programming the integrated PID controller on the PC board of the flowmeter, which can be optionally equipped with various fieldbus interfaces.

For small flow rates and low viscosities, Bronkhorst fits its own LIQUI-FLOW rotary displacement liquid pumps, which are virtually pulsation-free in operation, feature a stainless steel housing and tungsten carbide gears and bearings, and offer flow ranges from 0.5 to 4.0 kg/h. For applications requiring higher flow rates, higher pressures or aggressive dosing fluids, Bronkhorst employs HNP micro annular gear pumps, for flows up to 70 kg/h, and micropump liquid gear pumps, for flows up to 1,000 kg/h, both series again offering high precision dosing and pulseless delivery.

To ensure safe operation and prolonged reliability, Bronkhorst enables the response alarms on either the LIQUI-FLOW or CORI-FLOW flowmeter, which will stop the pump unit when flow is not within pre-set parameters or if there is a blockage downstream. Both instruments can also be used as batch counters, with the desired batch programmed into the integrated counter limit value, so that the instrument stops the pump when the limit is reached, until the next batch is reset.
