High-performance SCARA robots for rapid, accurate handling in assembly and processing applications

Keywords Assembly, Robots

Panasonic has expanded its family of automated factory automation systems by launching a new range of "SCARA" high-performance robots designed for handling applications demanding high-speed and high accuracy (see Plate 3).

Plate 3 Pana Robo HR Series

Ideally suited to high-speed light assembly and process applications, the Pana Robo HR series of SCARA-type horizontal articulated robots can handle payloads of between 3 and 15kg. Composite traverse speed for the HR35 3kg robot is in excess of 5000mm/s, while standard tact time is rated at just 0.47s. The robot's high accuracy gives a repeatability value of 0.015mm.

The new HR series uses miniature, high-speed AC servo motors to ensure rapid, accurate arm control and utilises a flexible and efficient high-performance controller design based around a 32-bit CPU and digital signal processor (DSP). The controller provides multitasking functionality that simplifies peripheral equipment requirements and allows shorter tact times to be achieved through parallel instruction execution. Depending on application requirements, the robot can be supplied with Windows 95 software for console programming or a programming pendant. An optional, "dial-in" remote diagnosis function ensures maximum productivity by minimising downtime.

Panasonic's new HR series comprises seven different models and includes options that are suitable for use in Class 100 clean room environments. As with other models in the Pana Robo family, Panasonic is able to design, configure, test and install completely integrated manufacturing cells based around the HR SCARA robots.
