ABB "FlexArc" convenience and performance now available with extended capacity

Keywords: Robots, Welding

ABB has extended its popular FlexArc robotic arc welding cell range, with the introduction of a new, larger capacity, heavy-duty unit, the FlexArc R-250 (Plate 4).

The FlexArc R-250 is a self-contained, highly portable arc welding system incorporating a powerful six-axis IRB1400 robot with programmable S4Cplus controller, choice of air or water-cooled welding torches and large capacity Orbit IRBP 250R weld positioner.

The Orbit 250R is a 750kg (1,650lb) capacity weld positioner which greatly extends the range and size of product that can be handled by the FlexArc system. The positioner uses a dual head/tailstock configuration of 1,588mm (63in) distance between centres and can accept workpieces up to a maximum of 983mm (39in) diameter. The system can also rotate the workpiece about its horizontal axis for optimum weld positioning and welding torch access.

The dual station configuration allows the robot to process welding operations at one station while the operator is loading/unloading the workpiece at the other. The positioner can be rotated through 180 degrees when signalled by the operator and a weld screen barrier isolates the operator from the welding process. Operators are thus separated from the undesirable welding environment and maximum robot productivity is maintained by eliminating the production time wasted during loading and unloading.

The FlexArc R-250 is equally suited to welding intricate part and fixture designs as it is to welding uncomplicated, easy-to-reach parts. Typical applications include exhaust systems, steering wheels, brake shoes, seat frames and shock absorbers, as well as hydraulic cylinders, bicycles, garden equipment and steel furniture.

The self-contained modular design of the FlexArc R-250, which includes palletized base assembly, perimeter screening, welding power supply (ABB Arcitec integrated 400A configuration optional), torch service and supply station, and photo-optic beam/light curtain barrier, allows the cell to be readily transportable from site-to-site, and setup with minimal downtime and inconvenience.

A comprehensive range of productivity enhancements is available for FlexArc, including the BullsEye calibration system that automatically maintains a constant, accurate tool centre point, SmarTac tactile sensor for quick and accurate weld seam location, and AWC (advanced weld control) "through-the-arc" tracking.

The new FlexArc R-250 is just one in a complete line of arc welding cell configurations, which, alongside ABB's professional service back-up and maintenance programmes, optimises productivity and maximises competitive advantage for the user.
