Calling all artificial intelligence specialists! – Entries invited for the 2003 British Computer Society Machine Intelligence Prize

Keywords: Artificial intelligence, Competition

Artificial intelligence specialists and amateurs working on their own, in business or in academia are warmly encouraged to put themselves forward for the British Computer Society's annual Machine Intelligence Prize. The competition is designed to encourage developments in applied machine intelligence. Finalists will be asked to give a live demonstration of their application at the BCS annual AI conference in Cambridge this December. The successful candidate, chosen by the conference delegates, will receive a trophy and a cash prize, provided by competition sponsors, Electrolux, as well as broad recognition from the AI community.

Professor Max Bramer, Chairman of the BCS Specialist Group on artificial intelligence explains, "Developments in applied machine intelligence have the potential for massive impact on society and business. The competition is a great opportunity to showcase advances and reward those individuals who are making real contributions to progress in this exciting field." Judges will be looking for ideas that represent genuine progress in this arena and will inspire its further development in the short, medium or long term.

Last year's competition attracted entries from around the world. The three finalists in 2002 demonstrated machine intelligence applied to electoral voting systems, to detect potentially life-threatening faults in metal structures and to industrial plasma processing.

"This technology is important to all of us. At Electrolux we consider that it has the potential to completely change our homes and how we manage our lives on a day-to-day basis," said Claire Gosnell of the Electrolux Group. "We want the competition to reflect just how much is going on in the field of machine intelligence and the crucial role that it can play in our world."

The competition is also being supported by the Applied Knowledge Research Institute (AKRI).

Individuals or organisations interested in entering the competition can find further details at www.bcs-sgai.org/ai2003/miprize, www.akri.org or by contacting Kate at AKRI on 01254 677433 or kate@akri.org. The closing date for submissions is 1 October 2003.
