This book is suitable for students and professionals alike. It addresses current robotics technology from a systems perspective and focuses on the relationship between robotics and computer integrated manufacturing (CIM).

Chapter 1 provides an Introduction to Industrial Robotics, while chapter 2 discusses Robot Classification. Chapter 3, Automated Work Cell and CIM Systems addresses subjects including the CIM implementation process, automated production, and flexible automation. End-of-Arm Tooling, and Automation Sensors are discussed in chapters 4 and 5, respectively.

Machine vision systems, material handling, part feeding and inspection are amongst the subjects addressed in chapter 6, Work-Cell Support Systems. Chapter 7 covers Robot and Systems Integration, while Work-Cell Programming is presented in chapter 8. Justification and Applications of Work Cells was a new contribution to the third edition and explains in terms of payback, return on investment and cash flow methods, and how automation of work-cells can be profitable.

In this new edition, chapter 10, Safety, has been expanded to include safety system calculations, developing a safety strategy, risk assessment, and injury and hazard reduction. Chapter 11 addresses Human Interface: Operator Training, Acceptance and Problems. A new chapter has been added providing a Work-Cell Design Case Study. It is based on the West Electric case study and has a total of 55 case study problems. The book also includes four appendices addressing Hardware Specification, Internet Resources, Justification Program, and a Glossary.

Overall, "Introduction to Robotics in CIM Systems" is a highly readable textbook. It contains numerous worked examples and numerical problems. A video and instructors manual are also available.
