This patent relates to a system and method for the automated preparation and delivery of prescription medications and other controlled substances to outpatients. It provides a system for the delivery of personalized pharmaceutical care by a single pharmacist who is responsible for providing care in multiple pharmacies.
It comprises a control location connected through an electronic network to one or more individual pharmacies, each of which may be located at a different physical site. Each individual pharmacy includes one or more drug preparation areas, and one or more self-service or staffed customer terminals. A drug preparation area includes a robot, which is adapted to prepare prescriptions or other items, and which is connected by a pneumatic delivery system to one or more customer terminals within the pharmacy.
The invention also aims to provide outpatient pharmaceutical care that results in more effective counselling of patients by using a larger database of patient information.
