European co-operation in police training

The European Commission has launched a E4.5 million programme to provide special training to policemen and policewomen, as well as other Civil Servants from the ten Central and East European countries that are seeking to join the European Union in a few years' time (Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia).

Specialists from the Association of European Police Schools, which is co-ordinating the programme, are being aided by training officers from ten EU member states - the UK, Ireland, Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain and Sweden.

The courses are covering four major themes:

1. 1.

   respect for the law and human rights;

2. 2.

   training;

3. 3.

   management; and

4. 4.

   police co-operation in Europe.

The programme is also covering different forms of criminality, including crime in the area of the environment, immigration control, scientific police methods, the maintenance of law and order, and the work of the police in a society which includes people of different languages and religions.

The training will enable officials from the countries of Central and Eastern Europe to compare their methods with those of EU member states, and to discover the latest methods used in the West.
