Learning Journals explores how to create the conditions in the reader's environment that are conducive to reflection, and how to channel and harness the use of the learning journal.
Essentially, vehicles for reflection, learning journals can be powerful and revealing learning tools. They may take the form of a portfolio, diary, personal record or commonplace book. Reflection, if managed in an ordered way, can provide great opportunities for learning, understanding and clarifying thought, both in one's personal life and in learning and professional development; herein lies the potential of learning journals.
However, the book is not simply a how-to-guide to developing journal-keeping skills. It looks at the role of journals in promoting learning, and how they may be used in academic, professional or personal development. In particular, it considers ways that journals can be assessed and suggests new approaches to this. It covers, in detail, practical methods for using learning journals with others, or on one's own, as well as providing a wide range of examples and activities for use in journals; it also contains an extensive bibliography.
The book should prove useful to teachers, educators, trainers and academics, as well as to new or established journal writers themselves, or those who wish to develop their reflective writing skills in other contexts.
