Making poverty history

A special issue of the Journal of Economic Studies on the topic "Making poverty history" is being planned for publication in 2006. The final issue publication date will depend on the number and quality of papers submitted, and the usual peer review procedures will be followed.

The Journal of Economic Studies publishes professional papers in economics, and closely related disciplines. It aims to report work of a high scientific standard. Poverty is a major topic for economists. Other social sciences have important contributions to make to this topic. Some aspects of the "Making poverty history" programme are best addressed by combining the approaches of two or more disciplines.

"Making poverty history" is an unusual development in the politics of economic life. Its origins fall outside the range of most pressure groups. Serious academic enquiry can ask what impact this movement will have on levels of poverty in Africa, and perhaps elsewhere. To know whether or not poverty is a thing of the past means having a clear enough idea of the meaning of the term poverty. Many questions arise, such as what needs to be done to achieve the objective? How likely is it that the necessary momentum will be maintained? Over what period might the programme be able to meet a reasonable standard of success?

It is unusual for a pressure group, if that is what we have, to focus on the needs of others. The international aspect of the democratic process involved has special features. The links to popular music and to familiar movements on globalisation and capitalism can be explored.
