The early chapters provide global and local contexts for issues relating to the measurement of productivity with particular respect to the Indian apparel industry. Many of the points discussed have relevance for a wider audience. A variety of sources and numerical examples are used to illustrate measures appropriate for the analysis of output in apparel factories. The book goes on to explore many of the causes of sub‐optimal levels of production.

Comparisons with the “western world” are made and strategies for improvement, such as benchmarking, are explored. The book concludes by detailing practical measures that could form part of a programme leading towards higher productivity.

This book provides useful insights for readers wishing to understand Indian apparel manufacturing in a broader context, as well as offering a useful toolkit for managers, supervisors and students looking for practical advice on how to affect productivity in the factory.
