About the Guest Editors

Nicholas TsounisProfessor of Economics at the Department of International Trade, Technological Educational Institute of Western Macedonia-Greece (TEI WM). He has a Bachelor’s degree in Economics (1987, Deptartment of Economics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece), an MA (Econ.) degree (1988, Department of Economics, University of Manchester, UK) and a PhD in International Trade Theory (1992, Department of Economics, University of Manchester-UK). He has taught courses and modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level in International Trade Theory, Micro-economics including Industrial Organisation, Public Economics and Regional Development at the National School of Public Administration, the Hellenic Air-Force Academy, National Technical University of Athens, Hellenic Open University, University of Macedonia and University of Manchester. He has published 27 papers in international scientific periodical and conferences and five books (three as an editor, one monograph and one textbook). He is a referee or peer reviewer for four scientific periodicals and various EU calls and he has participated either as a co-coordinator or member to many research programmes funded by the EU or national authorities. He is a member of the International Economics Study Group, the European Trade Study Group and an academic advisor to the Hellenic NARIC. He has served in various administrative positions in the TEI WM and he is currently holding the position of the Vice-Chancellor of Academic Affairs.

Aspasia VlahveiAssociate Professor of Marketing at the Department of International Trade, TEI WM. She got her PhD in Agricultural Economics from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) and she has been teaching industrial economics and cooperatives at under-graduate and post-graduate level. She has been visiting professor of AUTh, University of Macedonia-Greece and University of Thessaly. Her main research interests are industrial economics, agro-food marketing and cooperative economics. She has been author and co-author of about 20 papers in international refereed journals (including the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, Applied Economics and Agricultural Economics).

This special issue includes a number of papers presented in the International Conference of Applied Economics (ICOAE 2009), held at the Conference Centre of the Kastoria Campus of the Technological Institute of Western Macedonia, from 27 to 30 May, 2009.

The aim of the conference is to bring together economists from different fields of applied economic research in order to share methods and ideas. The topics covered include (but are not limited to): applied macroeconomics, applied international economics, applied microeconomics including industrial organisations, applied work on international trade theory including European integration, applied financial economics, applied agricultural economics, applied labour and demographic economics, applied health economics, applied education economic.

All papers presented in ICOAE 2009 and published in the conference proceedings were peer reviewed by anonymous referees. In total, 152 works were submitted from 39 countries while 101 papers were accepted for presentation and publication in the conference proceedings. The affiliated institutions of the conference participants were based on 26 different countries.
