Article Type: Guest editorial From: Journal of Quality in Maintenance Engineering, Volume 19, Issue 1.

In December 2010, the Fourth Asia-Pacific International Symposium on Advanced Reliability and Maintenance Modelling (APARM 2010) was held in Wellington, New Zealand. It attracted participants from more than 20 countries such as Australia, Canada, China, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, UK and USA. In this three-day workshop, researchers, scientists and practitioners from different parts of the world were brought together to discuss the state of research and practice in reliability and maintainability. They identified important and challenging problems in these areas and worked together to discover possible solutions.

In this special issue, we focus on advanced reliability modelling in maintenance. The research topics of the papers in the issue are related to maintenance engineering. We believe that each paper makes a useful contribution from a theoretical and/or practical viewpoint in advancing its field of research.

This special issue consists of extended versions of papers presented at APARM 2010. It includes studies on: life cycle cost analysis on the operation of power generation; optimal maintenance policies for an operating system using cumulative damage models; algorithm for finding minimal cut sequences in a dynamic fault tree; optimal policies for geometric process maintenance models.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the authors and reviewers for their effort in preparing this special issue. We also express our gratitude to Professor Salih O Duffuaa, Editor for the Journal of Quality in Maintenance Engineering whose guidance and cooperation encouraged our work on this special issue and led to its publication.
