ICARCV '98 Fifth International Conference on Control, Automation Robotics and Vision

The Fifth International Conference on Control, Automation, Robotics and Vision ICARCV'98 was held in Singapore on 8-11 December 1998. The meeting was organised by the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, The Institute of Engineers of Singapore, and the Singapore section of the IEEE.

Its theme was: "Automation Technology in the Asia Pacific Basin". The conference focused on the trends and impacts of automation technologies. There was no doubt that it provided a forum for Control and Automation professionals, manufacturing engineers and academic researchers to exchange up-to-date technical knowledge and experiences. It was aimed at both theoretical considerations and applications.

In addition to the technical sessions that were scheduled there were plenary ones as well as invited and tutorial sessions. In conjunction with the technical sessions an exhibition was held.

The main areas considered were:

  • Control: Modelling of Complex Systems * Control Methodologies and Applications * Estimation, Identification and Fault Detection * Adaptive and Learning Systems * Robust Control * Nonlinear Control * Intelligent Control * Process Control * Motion Control.

  • Automation: Instrumentation Systems * Flexible Manufacturing Systems * Process Automation * Man-machine Interactions * Computer Integrated Manufacturing * Factory Modelling and Automation * Petri Nets and Applications.

  • Robotics: Robot Control * Mobile Robots and Navigation* Task Planning * Intelligent Sensors and Actuators* Kinematics and Simulation * Dextrous and Redundant Manipulation * Medical Robots * Human-like Robots * Telerobotics * Undersea Robotics.

  • Computer vision: Image Processing and Interpretation * 2-D and 3-D Scene Analysis * Motion Analysis and Tracking * Pattern Recognition and Applications * Learning in Computer Vision * Parallel Algorithms for Computer Vision * Applications of Computer Vision.

  • Emerging technologies: Neural Networks and Fuzzy Systems * Genetic Algorithms * Realtime Systems * Mechatronics * Micro-electromechanical Systems * Electric Vehicle Technology.

The organisers were backed by a number of co-sponsors all of whom were closely associated with the development of technologies in Singapore and included the National Computer Board (NCB), the Singapore Computer Society as well as the Economic Development Board of the Republic. An International advisory committee had been formed and representatives from virtually every industrially oriented country served on it. The conference chair was Soh, Yeng Chai and he was supported by a number of other co-chairs.

It is to be hoped that the proceedings will be published; otherwise an important event will go unrecorded. Readers who want more information about this meeting should contact:
