New reference books

A number of new reference books are being published in 2005 which will be of interests to system lists and cyberneticians. If a library buys a print issue, access to the electronic version is offered for the life of the book. These include the following.

Encyclopedia of Database Technologies and Applications

Laura Rivero, Jorge Doorn and Viviana Ferraggine (Eds)Idea Group Reference (visit www.idea-group-ref.com)Hersey, PA2005 (available 4/2005)1-59140-560-2 (hardcover)650 pp.US $275.00 (suggested pre-publication price $235)

Considers a wide-ranging compendium of topics related to database concepts, the technologies involved and applications areas. Promises to provide a “state-of-the-art” review of classical subjects. The contributions to this encyclopedia come from 175 international researchers based in 33 countries, covering more than 970 terms. The technologies considered include multimedia database systems, geospatial and temporal databases and data-reverse engineering. The publishers consider the text to be an important reference source on topics in this field. It is of course a reference book one would expect to see in a library or possibly on the shelf of a research laboratory rather than amongst ones own texts.

The same publishers have also produced other encyclopedias based on important areas of research and development. They include the following.

Some 230 researchers have contributed to provide a collection of articles on this important emerging field. It develops topics such as multimedia evolution, design education, security and virtual communities. Some 1,300 terms and definitions are provided. It is of course essentially a library reference text.

Other titles are concerned with information science, knowledge management data warehousing and mining and distance learning.
