Editorial

Spring has arrived in most of the Northern Hemisphere and autumn is approaching in the rest of the world by the time you read this Issue. We are seeing lots of changes in the work that we do, not to mention how we report it in publications such as Library HiTech News. Conferences take on a different significance, as the economy does not always allow everyone to attend as many as they may choose nor travel as often as needed. Technology is now capturing and allowing for remote attendance and participation and video technology supports local groups to gather and watch via a satellite connection in the same time environment. It was reported in an editorial nearly a year ago that LHTN would concentrate on the major meetings that we could cover with volunteer reporters and instead more aggressively seek and welcome shorter features that introduce technology applications in library environments.

We think we have succeeded in this direction, but we want to be reassured that you are reading about things that are of interest to you. Please volunteer technologies you are testing and utilizing, or want to learn more about.

In this issue, we do have some interesting conference reports from different parts of the world, LIBCOM 2002, and the relevant technology-intensive sessions at the Midwinter American Library Association Meeting in January 2003. In addition, we have features from India that describe a Resource Sharing experience; from Singapore where we learn about new membership in OCLC; an Around the World trip to Middle East Technical University Library in Ankara, Turkey that will host the next IATUL conference in June 2003; and Part II of the eProfile on Scholar-based Innovations in Publishing. As a newsletter, we try and promote new developments and urge you to read the columns that appear in each issue, eCurrents, New & Noteworthy, New Books and our Diary/Calendar to keep abreast of what is happening around the globe that informs us of the latest technical trends.

Here at home, we always have leads to track for future issues but co-editor, Colby Riggs, is even busier than usual, considering that she is a candidate for President-elect of the Library & Information Technology Association (LITA) of the American Library Association. We wish her a successful outcome in this election.
