Keepers of the knowledge capital: legislating for the new millennium
Keepers of the knowledge capital: legislating for the new millennium
C. Carter, Management Decision (UK), Vol. 38 No. 3, 2000
Discusses the role of business schools and consultancies in the process of knowledge generation. Contends that the authoritative role traditionally played by universities is giving way to universities as interpreters and that knowledge capital now resides with consultants. Illustrates how a consulting organization generates knowledge in order to increase its own knowledge capital with a brief reference to electricity company CoastElectric. Believes that consultants' knowledge should be taken seriously instead of being dismissed by academics, particularly in view of the fact that they have access to far more knowledge than academics. Notes that, however controversial, the work of consultants has shaped theoretical debate and ponders whether the major consultancies will become the keepers of knowledge capital in the future, given that they are in the process of setting up their own stores of knowledge.
