Explains the benefits of the business excellence model (BEM), and illustrates with its application to a small UK chemical company entering for the East of England Excellence regional quality award in 1999. Describes the initial contract, subsequent interviews with four managers (not the chief accountant) asking about use of the BEM, and subsequent discussions. Compares it with the application of BEM at a local authority leisure department, documented by the Head of Leisure. Comments, on both case studies, that communication and an integrated approach to implementing BEM is essential and that BEM acts as a framework for building on other quality and improvement initiatives. Concludes that submission for an annual award requires a long lead time.
