Chief executive personality and export involvement

Halikias, J. and Panayotopoulou, L., Management Decision, (UK), 2003, Vol. 41 No. 4, Start page: 340, No. of pages: 10

Seeks to expand on research examining the influence of the chief executive officers' (CEO) personality on the export behavior of the firm; investigates the impact of 11 CEO characteristics on the decision of the firm to export (nine personality dimensions, two goal setting activities). Presents a literature review and puts forward a series of hypotheses relating to the relationship between CEO characteristics and a firm's export involvement. Reports on the participation in a questionnaire survey of CEO's from 81 small-to-medium sized (exporting) firms in Greece (table provided). Outlines the findings revealing those personality traits that were found to have some bearing on the export activity of firms; highlights how the results of the research supported the "upper echelons model" that stresses the importance of top management; puts forward that the personality of CEOs was found to be more important in smaller companies that in larger organizations; looks at the implications of the research for managers; highlights how the study established the importance of the CEO in the export behavior of small firms; concludes with suggestions for future research.
