EURAM 2008 Managing Diversity: European Destiny and Hope

Dates and location: 14-17 May 2008, Ljubljana and Bled, Slovenia

In a dramatically changing world characterized by rapid globalization, unprecedented technological progress, and structural, institutional, demographic, sociological and psychological shifts, Europe is facing new challenges and searching for adequate responses and trying to achieve the ideal of building and sustaining global competitiveness while maintaining social harmony. It requires huge economic restructuring and equally dramatic social transformation.

Geographic, historic, economic, institutional, demographic, cultural, and social differences make Europe the most diverse, heterogeneous, and in some aspects also the most fragmented, region in the world. Leading and managing change in such a context is both an exceptional challenge but also an opportunity.

The issue of operational excellence, standardization, and unification versus creativity and innovation, entrepreneurialism, and respect for culture and values is becoming increasingly important at the individual, organizational/institutional, and social levels as well. Creating a dynamic balance and possible synergies between these two apparently conflicting demands is a huge leadership and managerial challenge but also an intellectual one. At the same time it is also another opportunity, since diversity is an inexhaustible source of creativity, innovation, and breakthrough thinking.

European management theory and practice are lagging behind in terms of their focus on diversity and their implications for leading and managing change and developing managerial and leadership capabilities. The EURAM (European Academy of Management) 2008 Conference invites you to contribute to bridging the gap.

Our gathering in Ljubljana and Bled will be the first EURAM Conference organized in the CEE region. As an association focused on change and which celebrates diversity and fosters creativity, innovation and respect for culture, CEEMAN, in cooperation with member institutions the Faculty of Economics, University of Ljubljana, and the IEDC-Bled School of Management, will bring a perspective from the CEE region the world’s largest laboratory of change.

Join us in Ljubljana and Bled on 14-17 May 2008 to explore and discuss these issues in a highly diverse, multidisciplinary, multi-departmental, multi-institutional, and multicultural environment that you will yourself create by bringing and exposing your own approaches, views, research methodology, tools and results, experiences, philosophy, tradition, and values.

Diversity is the biggest European challenge but also its most fascinating opportunity!

3rd Workshop on Organisational Change and Development: Advances, Challenges and Contradictions

Dates and location: 27-28 September 2008, Bucharest, Romania

The conference seeks to bring together international scholars and practitioners with a view to exploring perspectives and insights into the theory and practice of organizational change and development (OCD). OCD is emerging as a major focus of attention among management theorists and practitioners throughout the world. Global issues and trends such as privatization, public sector reform, mergers and acquisitions, the influence of MNCs, population migration, poverty, and advances in ICT, present major challenges to those charged with equipping people and organizations to adapt and flourish in these turbulent times. This multi-dimensional complexity of OCD is highlighted by the reports of relatively high failure rates associated with organizational change interventions.

It is notable that in recent years the scope of organizational change literature has rapidly expanded, reflecting the clear existent need to push back the parameters of knowledge and understanding surrounding OCD theory and practice. Yet these advances in the body of knowledge on OCD have also unearthed numerous contradictions surrounding issues such as: the aims of OCD; power and the ownership of change interventions; the ethics of organizational change; value clashes across national cultures; the transfer of OCD theories and practices across national boundaries; the role of internal and external change management consultants; and the evaluation of OCD interventions from multi-stakeholder perspectives. The conference will explore advances, challenges and contradictions in the field of OCD from both theoretical and practical perspectives. The conference is open to contributors from diverse geographical, sectoral, and disciplinary backgrounds with the aim of sharing and obtaining fresh insights into a wide range of OCD issues. We invite contributions from both academics and practitioners. As a guide only, we anticipate that papers are likely to focus on some of the following topics:

  • the impact of globalization on organizational change theory and practice;

  • challenges facing OCD theory and practice in developed countries;

  • organizational change practice in developing/transitional countries;

  • national culture and organizational change;

  • the State and organizational change;

  • international organizations (including MNCs) as organizational change agents;

  • organizational change and not-for-profit organizations;

  • organizational change and public sector reform;

  • the diffusion of organizational change theory and practice;

  • the role and activities of HRM/D functions in organizational change interventions;

  • learning and organizational change;

  • organizational change failures;

  • ICT and organizational change;

  • developments in the theory and/or practice of Organization Development (OD);

  • consultants as agents of organizational change;

  • values and organizational change; and

  • resistance to organizational change.

28th SMS Annual International Conference

Dates and location: 12-15 October 2008, Cologne, Germany

In 2008, SMS will be holding its annual conference in Cologne, Germany. For European scholars this gives a convenient opportunity to be present at the only dedicated international strategy forum.

The conference has a relatively new Strategy as Practice interest group which is exciting considerable interest and growing rapidly. The numbers for the interest group grew by 20 per cent last year. The style of the Strategy as Practice track is different from other tracks with three different methods of interaction. The pre-conference sessions are discursive debates with practitioners upon a wide range of business issues. The main conference consists of a mix of normal paper sessions and round table sessions. The latter are new to this conference and are powerful sessions orchestrated by thought leaders in the field.

One way in which the interest group is exciting interest and attention is the launch of a new and very successful innovation in 2007: the creation of the first Practice Implications prize. This was won by Christian Seelos and Johanna Mair of IESE business school, Spain. The prize has raised the profile of the Strategy as Practice group significantly and the award of $1,000 US will be available again at the 2008 conference. Details of the prize can be found on the SMS home page.

The Strategy as Practice field in strongly embedded in the European context and SMS in Cologne gives the interest group a real opportunity to influence a more international audience. Proposals for the conference are to arrive at the SMS offices by 4 February 2008.

Eden Doctoral Seminar on Producing and Evaluating Knowledge in Management Accounting: jointly with the 6th Conference on New Directions in Management Accounting

Dates and location: 12-17 December 2008, Brussels, Belgium

EDEN calls to everyone’s mind the garden of earthly delights to which the Book of Genesis refers. It evokes the attractive and creative environment that EIASM offers to young promising scholars who undertake the exciting doctoral adventure.

Through the creation of EDEN, EIASM will contribute to the most critical phases in a scholar’s life cycle: i.e. his/her introduction to and early growth on the academic market. Thanks to its unique image and its organizational competitive advantages (core of associations, autonomy and flexibility), EIASM can indeed be very efficient at:

  • inserting young doctoral fellows into a highly stimulating system where European researchers can interact (within and across associations), sharing common objectives and concerns;

  • helping them in the positioning of their own work in relation to European research generally: expose them to various research traditions and orientations, open their minds to the international/global perspectives to be adopted when looking at the Management environment, make them aware of the challenges Management is facing in Europe (globalization, new technologies, etc.); and

  • creating a network of European educators active at the doctoral level in Management.

The development of EDEN will be organized around an integrated set of doctoral seminars which will bring participants into systematic interaction, leading them to comparing their approaches and cross-examining their research work. It will consist of a mix of intensive one-week seminars dealing with advanced research methodology issues in Management, as well as with the frontiers of their specific area of interest.

EIASM involves not only the best doctoral students and their supervisors, but also the institutions to which they belong. Therefore the doctoral seminars will be decentralized: alternating locations and establishing “linkages” with leading European Business Schools. Since June 1988, when the programme was launched, 2,010 doctoral students from all over Europe have become EDEN fellows and 238 professors have acted as EDEN faculty members.

6th Conference on New Directions in Management Accounting

Dates and location: 15-17 December 2008, Brussels, Belgium

The rate of change in the practice of and research on management accounting appears to be increasing. Many organisations are attempting to change their existing, or implement new and innovative, management accounting practices, based on new management accounting and business ideas, practices, strategies, structures, processes, systems, and information. A number of new challenging objects of measurement and control have recently emerged, including intellectual capital and networks of organisations. The roles and designs of budgeting systems appear to be changing. While much of this innovation and implementation concentrates on new costing or performance measurement systems, there is also change related to the roles of management accountants in organisations. Current developments outlined above provide many new opportunities for innovative management accounting research, and for a fruitful integration of existing accounting knowledge and the currently emerging practice issues.

The purpose of this conference, like its five predecessors, is to examine innovative management accounting practices and innovative ideas about how to conduct research on them. The conference will consist of plenary sessions and research paper presentations. The general theme for this next conference is “Innovations and management accounting“. The theme covers issues like management accounting in innovative firms, planning and control of innovations, management accounting for product development, innovative management accounting concepts and technologies, and innovative research methods in management accounting. The invited plenary speakers are:

  • Robert Bloomfield, Cornell University, USA;

  • Antonio Davila, IESE Business School, Spain;

  • Joan Luft, Michigan State University, USA; and

  • Jan Mouritsen, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark.

Submission of papers that deal with innovative management accounting practices, theories, and research methods are particularly relevant to this conference. For reference, papers on the following types of issues are welcomed warmly.

Practice

  • innovative management accounting practices in particular parts of the world;

  • management accounting in new organizational designs (flat, horizontal, matrix, network, virtual, team);

  • management accounting systems for enterprise resource planning systems, e-commerce, electronic data interchange, electronic meetings, customer relationship management, and supply chain management;

  • value chain accounting;

  • new management accounting techniques, processes and information;

  • linkages between competitive strategy and management accounting;

  • integration/disintegration of management accounting;

  • challenges of globalisation for management accounting;

  • changing roles of management accountants in organizations; and

  • information about what practitioners expect management accounting researchers to do.

Research
