The preface states that “this book should be of great interest to professionals in the fields of neurology, occupational and environmental medicine, and neuroscience research, and to those involved in toxic tort proceedings who are concerned with chemical exposure‐related illnesses.” The book is written by a single author, which has the advantage of greater uniformity in language style but the common difficulty of any individual expert being able to have a comprehensive knowledge of so many chemicals from his or her own practical experience.

As is common with many textbooks from the USA, the author tends to focus on the US scene. For instance, he starts off with a table (I‐1) which gives “principal governmental agencies responsible for most occupational and environmental health issues”, seemingly oblivious of the fact that there are many international and other national (non‐US) agencies dealing with the same issues.

The common substances encountered in occupational settings which can cause neurological problems are included in this book. Each chapter follows a fairly logical sequence, usually sources of exposure, exposure limits and safety regulations, metabolism, clinical manifestations and preventive and therapeutic measures. At the end of chapters are interesting accounts of Icclinical experiences.

In general, this is a sound and authoritative textbook which is very readable and should be a useful reference resource for an important subject.
