EU states making steady progress on water law

EU member states are making good progress in applying the 2000 EU Water Framework Directive (WFD), an implementation scoreboard for the directive has revealed. Only Italy and Greece have failed to submit to the European Commission an analysis of river basin districts that will underpin the directive. The analysis was required by the end of 2004.

In addition, Italy and five other member states – Germany, Luxembourg, Portugal, Belgium and Finland have yet to notify full transposition of the directive into national law, says the scoreboard, which appears in the bulletin from the EU Water Information System (WISE). The Interreg IIIB Project “Strategies for a Sustainable River Management” (“Watersketch”: www.watersketch.net) is working on the means to support delivery of the WFD and will produce a Handbook with case studies aimed at guiding its implementation.
