Coping with Global Change in Marine Social-ecological Systems

8-11 July 2008, Rome, Italy

The central goals of the symposium are to share experiences across disciplines and to identify key next steps and common elements and approaches that promote resilience of marine social-ecological systems in the face of global changes. This involves:

  exploring conceptual issues relating to social-ecological responses in marine systems to global changes;

  analysing case studies of specific examples of social-ecological responses in marine systems to significant environmental changes manifested locally;

• •

  synthesising the work of natural and social scientists and building comparisons of social-ecological responses in marine ecosystems subjected to major environmental variability;

• •

  developing innovative approaches to the use of science and knowledge in management, policy and advice; and

• •

  identifying lessons for governance for building resilient social-ecological systems.

World Sustainable Building Conference

The World Sustainable Building (SB) Conference series, which is held every three years, is the peak gathering of the world’s leading technical experts and researchers on sustainable built environments.

Fifth EMSU Conference “A new knowledge culture. Universities facing global changes for sustainability”

15-17 October 2008, Barcelona, Spain

The Fifth EMSU Conference will be held in Barcelona, Spain from 15-17 October 2008 at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, co-organized with Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and RCE-Barcelona. The aim of the conference is to provoke debate on the role of the university in sustainability, particularly in the following five key areas of global change:

1. 1.

   climate change and resource scarcity;

2. 2.

   production and consumption systems;

3. 3.

   governance and changing responsibilities;

4. 4.

   poverty and equity; and

5. 5.

   urban systems.

EMSU aims to consider these areas from the following key areas of activity in a university: teaching, research, internal management and relations with the community. To maximise participation and minimise its environmental impact, the conference offers opportunities to participate without travelling to Barcelona, including an online survey, workshops in different parts of the world and opportunities to connect to the final conference via the web.
