Mixed fortunes for shipping regulation

Article Type: News From: Management of Environmental Quality: An International Journal, Volume 19, Issue 5

The International Maritime Organisation’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) has confirmed the approval of a ground-breaking international deal to reduce air pollution from the shipping sector with the introduction of stringent new limits on sulphur content in fuels.

Details of the MEPC’s discussions on shipping and climate change have now also emerged. The body agreed to accelerate work to agree greenhouse gas emission indexes and baselines, according to an IMO statement. It also continued consideration of proposals to tax fuels, introduce an emission-trading scheme and impose speed restrictions on vessels to reduce emissions.
