Engineering Education in Sustainable Development (EESD10)

19-22 September, Gothenburg, Sweden

Sustainable development requires a shift towards a society that better addresses basic human needs and the limitations of natural systems. A transformation of mindsets, educational approaches, societal structures, technical systems, and economic accounting methods is needed.

Engineering education institutions can play an important role in this transformation and in the sustainable society if sustainable development becomes a framework for a redesign of the structure and goal of organizations and of pedagogical, research and cooperation approaches and methods. This conference addresses the role of engineering education in the learning for the required transformation.

The event organisers welcome abstracts from all over the world that share results and experiences from research and development efforts related to engineering education in sustainable development, e.g. on:

  • Learning outcomes and competencies, e.g. the relation between program goals, accreditation criteria and societal needs, and assessment of learning.

  • Teaching and learning activities, e.g. dealing with attitudes and values or with transformative learning.

  • Pedagogical approaches, e.g. work integrated learning, network-based learning and problem-based learning.

  • Curriculum transformation, e.g. embedding of sustainable development.

  • Professional development of engineers, and other groups.

  • Institutional change, e.g. support, training, and other incentives for lecturers, ESD in EMS.

  • Campus development, e.g. using campus as a lab bench.

  • Cooperation, e.g. interdisciplinarity, work-integrated learning, entrepreneurship, and innovation.

  • Societal change, e.g. governance, policy instruments, future role of engineering education institutions.

  • Student involvement, e.g. student initiatives.

Contributions must be reflective and analytical and not mere descriptions of performed activities.

The conference will focus on innovative aspects of Hazardous and Industrial Waste Management (including organics, non-halogenated and halogenated solvents, hydrocarbons, pesticides, explosives, PCBs, PCDDs/Fs, heavy metals, asbestos, nuclear wastes, salts, etc.), presenting new technologies, describing the state of the art and related case studies, discussing the main controversial subjects, sharing experience among different countries, valuating social and financial balances. The conference will include oral presentations, poster sessions, special sessions, and workshops. The official language of the conference will be English.

Authors are invited to submit an extended abstract (at least one, but no more than two full pages), which may be submitted electronically at hwm.conferences@enveng.tuc.gr < hwm.conferences@enveng.tuc.gr>. Full papers (maximum eight pages) should be addressed to the Organizers and received no later than May 15, 2010. The full papers will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee and papers of inadequate quality will be removed from the Conference Program. All papers accepted for presentation at the Conference will be published in the Conference Proceedings and selected papers will also be published in international scientific Journals.

More information will be soon available at the Conference official web site: www.hwm-conferences.tuc.gr

Climate 2010

The on-line conference Climate 2010 will be held on 1-7 November 2010.

Its aims are to:

  • introduce the latest findings on scientific research on climate change, including elements related to its environmental, social, economic and policy aspects;

  • introduce projects and other initiatives being undertaken in both industrialised and developing countries by universities and scientific institutions, government bodies, NGOs and other stakeholders; and

  • discuss the problems, barriers, challenges and chances and potentials related to the social, economic and political aspects of climate change worldwide.

Last but not least, the Climate 2010 conference will encourage more networking and information exchange among participants and hopefully catalyse new cooperation initiatives and possibly new projects.
