Finland approves two new nuclear reactors

The Finnish government has given the green light to two new nuclear power plants, giving preliminary planning permission to Finnish utility TVO and international consortium Fennovoima, which includes energy company Eon. The reactors, set to be completed by 2020, will still need parliamentary approval. The Finnish Green party, who is a partner in the governing coalition, has said it will vote against the plans. The government rejected Fortum’s nuclear project Loviisa 3.

Finland already has four nuclear reactors. TVO is building a fifth reactor at the Olkiluoto plant, a project plagued by construction problems delaying its completion by three years. The Finnish government recently announced a plan to massively boost renewable energy production at a scale equivalent to three big nuclear power plants. Under EU rules Finland must raise the share of renewables to 38 per cent of energy consumption by 2020.
